The hawklets are beginning to venture out of the nest. They are really eager to try their wings, and do not care one bit that their flight feathers are not long enough. Watch them in this video as they flutter-fly, landing on their siblings as they plop down into the nest. They can't wait.... and they won't.
Here is another video of the cooplets playing in the nest. My friend Hiker says they look like kids at a slumber party! Notice how one bold chick has ventured up to perch beside Roxie on her limb.

Tropical Storm Bill blew through Dallas today, emptying buckets of water from the skies. Howling wind blew through the trees, and I'm sure the little hawks laid low. North Texas lakes are overflowing, and flood waters are pouring into the Trinity River.
Late this afternoon, I took a look, just to make sure the nest was still secure in the tree. I did see one little brown hawk head peering out of the leaves. Roxie was not on her usual perch, so I'm guessing she may have been down in the nest too, making sure her little ones stayed put.

This morning I set up my camera just in time for breakfast! As the video started recording, I could see two little hawks in the nest. Then a third hawk dropped down from its perch above the nest. No doubt he saw Roxie flying to the nest with breakfast. As soon as she arrived (from the right-hand side), a fourth young hawk quickly flew to the nest! So there are definitely four youngsters, at least: I suppose we'll have to call them Huey, Dewey, Louise, and Donald -- in honor of Uncle Donald Duck.
Roxie quickly moved away from the busy youngsters, leaving them to divide up breakfast on their own. Here is another video of the four cooplets as they dive in, bottoms up. Don't you believe me? Count 'em. Four little hawk bottoms!
